Worried about your irrigation repair? Don't know where to start? Read here for general information about the many parts of your irrigation system. Controller Sometimes called "clock" or "timer" this is the brain of your system. Usually mounted in your garage (in Texas, anyway), it tells each valve when to come on and how long to water. Problems with this component are frequently solvable with reprogramming or resetting. This component should be adjusted according to the seasons for optimal water savings and plant health. New technologies in controllers can create your water schedule based on weather or specific site inputs to help you water smarter all year through. Valves There are one of these for each "zone" or "station" of irrigation on your property. It gets activated by the controller, via the wire, and turns that zone on for a specified amount of time. Common problems with valves can be distorted diaphragm or debris in the diaphragm, failed solenoid, or wiring issues. Pipe This is buried in the ground and delivers water from your water supply to your landscape. Broken pipes lead to water leakage and high water bills, but can almost always be repaired. Wire Many homeowners don't realize the electrical aspect of the irrigation system, but wiring runs from the controller to every zone valve in your system, usually in the same trenches with your pipe. Wire breaks can usually be repaired, but can be time consuming to trace. Heads This is the parts of your irrigation system that you can see. They are usually spray heads or rotor heads. These are frequently victims of lawn mower damage, vandalism, or sometimes just need to be adjusted for proper operation. Nozzles These are installed on your heads to direct water in the right direction and angle. Newer nozzles offer water savings solutions that were not available 5, 10 or 20 years ago. Upgrading nozzles is a relatively low cost way to possibly improve water efficiency, depending on the age and condition of your irrigation system. Landscape Your plant life is a very important part of your irrigation system. Over time, maturing plants can cause a need to readjust or move heads installed previously, or changes in landscape design may call for a redesign of portions of your irrigation system. Water wise plantings can reduce your need for landscape watering. For more detailed information about components of an irrigation system, visit the homeowner page of Hunter Industries. |
